Minutes of the July 2005 Meeting
MINUTES OF THE NURSE PROJECT MEETING HELD ON WEDNESDAY, 6th JULY 2005
AT 12.15, CONFERENCE ROOM, COMMUNITY HEALTH, DARGAVILLE HOSPITAL

Present: Merryll Frear, Julie Robertson, Viv Andrew, Celeste Sherman, Cherry Waldron, June Henwood, Kathy Bowmar, Kate McLaren, Julie Palmer, Raewyn Fowlie

Apologies: Gail – Kauri Coast Hosptial/Resthome, Marilyn Archibald – Te Ha, Judy Harris – DMC, Mary Munn – Access Home Care, Rachael Sullivan & Glenis Turner – NH, Whangarei, Jen Udy – Ward, NH.

Previous Minutes: Amend to read that Viv Andrews was present at the June meeting.

Matters Arising: To be discussed at the August meeting.

Business: Welcome, Introduction & Nursing Innovations Focus Meeting:

Julie introduced the two Nursing Innovations Evaluators – Kelly Gibson & Sandra Thompson – who then gave background info on themselves.

Evaluation of the 11 pilot Nursing Innovation projects is taking place. However, 4 are being case studied in detail, with the Northland NIL’s being one of the four. So far, the study has resulted in a Literature Review, and soon to be released by the MOH – “Building Innovative Capacity Report”

As the three Northland NIL positions are different, more time is being allocated to allow for an indepth study in the 3 regions that will show the commonalities and uniqueness of each role.

Kelly and Sandra are taking today’s Project Meeting as an opportunity to conduct a focus group study on the results that Julie’s position has had on Nursing integration and relationship building within the community.

All participants were asked to sign an acknowledgement that they were taking part and that the session was being (audio) recorded. Participants were also asked if it was appropriate that Julie remained or leave the room. She stayed on and was allocated the task of writing up some of the issues discussed for further reference.

When the session ended, Kelly & Sandra advised that they would be back in Kaipara next Wednesday should anyone, who has not had the opportunity, wish to make and appointment to see them then. Contact via email or phone was also encouraged.

A copy of the written report will be available via Julie when it is completed.

Meeting Closed: at 1.45pm Next Meeting: Wednesday 3rd August 2005, Nurses Lounge, Community Health, facilitated by Cherry Waldron

Kia ora tatou

During the last month, 2 groups interested in Primary Health Care Nursing have visited Northland. The first was Tine Hansen Turton from the USA. The purpose of her visit was to exchange ideas about nursing, promote Nurse Led primary health care centres in both New Zealand and the USA, to disseminate ideas about the role of the Nurse Practitioner in PHC, to learn about how the NZ Public health care system manages IT and funding arrangements.

The workshop Tine presented at was attended by PHCN, planners, funders and providers of Primary health care services. A report of the workshop and the outcomes will be available at the next Nurse Project meeting or on request from the writer. A steering group will be established to explore the feasibility of setting up a Nurse led primary health care centre in Northland.

NORTHLAND NURSING INNOVATION PILOT
The Nursing innovation researchers came to Northland in July to undertake a ‘case study’ visit. That included an extensive program of meeting and interviewing people who had been involved with the Nursing Innovation Pilot here in Northland in some way. 3 Reports will be written that will come out of the innovations. A literature review on Nursing Innovations, a report on what enables innovation to take place and a report on what has come out of the 11 Pilot innovations.

In Kaipara, the researchers interviewed nurses from Te Ha, DMC, Nurse Managers, the CEO of KCI and the administrator of KCI, Raewyn Fowlie. In addition, they did a focus group interview at the Project Nurse meeting. Nurse Managers were also part of a focus group interview at the Regional Nurse Leadership Group meeting.

SUPPORTING THE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS OF NURSES INVOVED IN CAREPLUS
The CarePlus coordinators at Manaia Health PHO have organised a series of 4 workshops to be held over the next 12 months that follow on from the highly successful CarePlus Symposium held at Barge Park last month. Each workshop will focus on one of the 4 main chronic diseases currently being addressed in the CarePlus program, ie Diabetes, COPD, CHF, and IHD. The sessions will include pharmacology, motivating changing of lifestyles and building the knowledge and skills of nurses to help people living with these conditions.

Nurses who are involved in CarePlus are welcome to attend these workshops, either all, or those of particular interest. The dates of the first workshop is August 20th, for further information, contact Mary Carthew or Jayne Hill at Manaia Health PHO, phone 09 438 1015.

The CarePlus workshop that was planned for Kaipara is now cancelled so that nurses can link with the Manaia Health CarePlus Education program.
