Update from Chris Tipa, CEO, KCI
With Care Plus being rolled out by the PHO shortly, Trish and Julie have been considering bringing the TADS course to Kaipara, this course has been reported as being effective in teaching nurses how to help people change unhealthy behaviours, making the most of brief opportunities nurses have with their clients.. This is but one training opportunity and will be considered in light of what nurses perceive their learning needs to be and identifying the most effective way of meeting those needs. –
Chris spoke on an Integration theme and told the group about the survey audit currently being undertaken on 4 DHB’s
and PHO’s with KCI as one of the respondents.
He then spoke on current plans to integrate aspects of IT communication between Te Ha & DMC. KCI is funding installation of “Secure IT”, a programme that will allow the safe transfer of messaging between the two organisations. A single referral system is being worked on. A new Practice Management System (PMS) “My Doctor” will be installed during 2005.

Other
ˇNoelene Warmington has been employed by Te Ha to take over Rhonda’s position. She will commence in Jan 05.
ˇ NDHB elections – Pauline Allen-Downs sponsored by NZNO was elected. No successful candidates from rural communities. It was discussed that a letter of discontent with the situation could be forwarded to the MOH in the hope that their choice of nominees may balance this discrepancy.
ˇ Facilitator for the Dec meeting – Pam Baldwin volunteered. Christmas theme.

Meeting Closed: at 1.45pm

Next Meeting: Wednesday 1st December 04 - 12.30 – 1.30 - Lunch Provided.

Speical K Women's Triathalon - Kaipara Health Team
When: 7am, Sunday, 23rd January 2005
Where: Bream Bay, Ruakaka
Event: 300m swim, 15km bike ride (very flat) & 3km run/walk

Are there any nurses who would like to be part of a Kaipara Health team? (I’m sure we can come up with a better name than that!) This is a great opportunity for you to participate with other women in an incredible shared lifetime experience. Regardless of size, shape, age or fitness, it’s a real booster for both physical fitness and mental well-being.

I’ve registered and am getting a group from Kaipara to join in, but registrations to the event are limited so give me a call soon if you would like to be part of it. The training helps you get through the silly season!

Julie's Column
Kia ora tatou/Greetings

Xmas is Nigh!
One month till Christmas! Just when you thought it had been a full on year, December hits! If you’re anything like me, lots of commitments finish in November and you feel you can breathe a sigh of relief, only to turn around and realize its time to start getting ready for the Christmas season and holidays to follow! Actually, I love it and am really looking forward to this Christmas, I hope you are too.

MeNZB Campaign
Unless you have been asleep for a prolonged period of time, you will be aware; the MeNZB campaign has rolled out in Te Tai Tokerau! If you visit the Outpatients area in Dargaville Hospital any day now, you will see a transformed, Child friendly space. Northland Health has been extremely generous by allowing one of the Outpatient clinics to be used solely for Immunizations throughout the 4 month campaign. A big thank you, to Celeste Sherman, Jen Udy and Julie Robertson, for going above and beyond the call of duty supporting the smooth running of this campaign in their nice and previously quiet, clinic!

Te Ha, DMC, KCI, the Ringa Atawhai Network, and the Maori Women’s Welfare League have all pulled together to launch a campaign that is integrated, coordinated and well organized. The Kaipara Immunisation Team can be readily identified by their bright, fluro green T-shirts, worn to be a cheerful look for the kids and their families.

Thanks to these Local Sponsors
McKay Electrical has generously donated a TV Video for the duration of the campaign. Gary Mitchell has installed it in the Waiting Room so the kids can be distracted, or entertained, with movies and cartoons during the 20 minute post Vaccination observation period. The Dargaville Warehouse donated two colourful beanbags for the children to sit on. Dargaville and District News have also contributed by making sure our stories are told, and that the MENZB campaign has a high profile now and throughout the coming months. A big thanks to all these sponsors!

As you can see, Kaipara has been amazing at collaborating and cooperating to provide excellent and acceptable health services for the community. What I have noticed among all of this is the willingness of people to go the extra mile to make it successful, and the enhancement of relationships as a result of this cooperative working. Well done to all of the Nurses.

25yrs+ Service
I would also like to acknowledge and congratulate TWIGGY (aka Heather Carter) who is celebrating a 25 + year career of dedicated and continued Nursing at Dargaville Hospital. Twiggy was acknowledged at a Celebrity Dinner on November 25th at Barge Park with some 60 other Northland Health Staff who were also publicly acknowledged for their long service to Northland Health and the people of Northland.
Kevin McNeill our Porter is the only other staff member at Dargaville Hospital to have been employed for longer than 25 years. Between them they have a lot of knowledge; Twiggy has agreed to write her story in the next Korero.

HPCA Act
I have read with interest the letters in the Kai Tiaki about changes which the HPCA Act will bring for nurses. In particular, the nurses expressing frustration and anger at having to compile and produce evidence in the form of Portfolios for their Competence Based Practicing Certificates. While I sympathise with nurses who are fed up with more documentation or who don’t see the need for change by having to spend well earned time off reflecting on our practice, I don’t think Nurses need to be insulted or intimidated by this requirement.

I see so much evidence of change in health care with technology, nursing knowledge, skills and roles that it is important that we demonstrate we know what we are doing and why we are still doing it. In a newly placed cabinet in the hospital reception there is a display of historical memorabilia from our hospitals and nursing environments. Included, is the ‘BED REST’ sign, which I and many of you will have used during your nursing career. It’s an interesting example of what was a very acceptable and therapeutic ‘Nursing Care’, and is now relegated to a display cabinet. It made me think about how in the course of a nursing career so much changes, and that we need to be open to those changes.

Mary Carthew, Nursing Integration Leader for Manaia Health PHO has created a Nursing Portfolio for any nurse to peruse and learn from. I have copies available for anyone who would like a copy.

Until next time, take care and all the very best to all .

Julie
