Previous Minutes: True and correct Blessing of kai: by Julie Palmer Matters Arising: Script Costs Still big concerns about the difference in funding for specialist scripts. Chris is taking the issue to the PHO Managers meeting. It has already gone to the DHB and Ministry. Possibility of doing something small at a local level. It affects mostly paediatric clinic. The problems only came to light since the change over in pharmacy ownership, however, it was not new as the pharmacy would dispense the medication prescribed by the specialist then ring DMC for a covering script. It is a national problem and is being dealt with at national level. KCHT Shuttle/Bus Service More information needed on this service. It also needs to be marketed with a poster like that for the shuttle bus and leaflets like those given to patients travelling to Kaitaia for surgery. Debbie to find out. Business: Avian Flu Question was asked: where is Kaipara at with a local emergency plan? District Council are getting an emergency group together. Emergency Response kit in Outpatients has been updated. Agreed we need some feedback. Homeopath should be on planning group. Agreed to ask someone from Council to come to next meeting for information on the plan and to discuss membership. Julie Palmer to organise. Help For Older People Hui A meeting was held locally with the DHB for feedback on what reps in Kaipara considered okay, what gaps were perceived and possible “gap fillers”. The DHB have a 15 year strategy with 2yr, 5yr and 10yr action plans. 15 attended from resthomes, Access, SW, PHO, Nursing Manager, CARS and others. Minutes are available for anyone who is interested. Gaps identified: No 1 was transport. Others included social services for the elderly, a social/drop in centre, Age Concern, dementia support, etc. When plan is released will get groups together to implement. Responsibility will lie with PHO Well Elderly monitoring needs to be more in line with Whangarei and the rest of the Northland community. It was pointed out that what works in Whangarei and elsewhere doesn’t work in Dargaville. DHB will look at local differences. Pay Parity NZNO Petition forms were given out. 10 signatures are required per petition page. Anyone can sign, not just nurses. These will be returned to the Ministry. Health Promotion Funds are available on application, the next round is in November. Julie Palmer is happy to work with anyone who wants to put in an application Te Ha are making a video to push smoking cessation to young people. Te Ha have been trying to get Dargaville High School into the Health Promoting Schools programme. Schools are under-resourced at this stage. Liz Humm is away and PHNs have been seconded to MeNZB. There are lots of school based projects for youth health. We should pool resources, maybe have GP, nurses, SW etc for one week at the school. Need network meetings. These projects could be funded by Health Promotion or SIA. A survey of school children should be undertaken to see what they consider are their needs. Rhonda has survey results of youth who have left school and have no job. They need to know about the 112 clinic. NIL Report Children’s day/SKIP – 3 organisations have got together and put in a proposal to MoH and now having funding for a SKIP position in Whangarei. We could do the same in Kaipara. There is a new mothers’ group at Whakapiringa and also at Te Ha. The new Paediatric Dietician feels as Dargaville is only 45 minutes away from Whangarei she doesn’t need to come to Dargaville for clinics. There are some big issues with families not able to attend in Whangarei. Again, really high risk children are falling through the cracks. Simone, Sages coordinator has been asked to do a presentation at the next meeting. Kaipara District Council should also be asked to send a representative to talk on the Avian Flu issue. Tentative arrangements were made for a Christmas get together at Debbie’s in Baylys Beach. Pot luck, bring wine! Meeting Closed: at 1.50 pm Next Meeting: Wednesday 7 December 2005, Conference Room, Community Health, Dargaville Hospital. – Lunch provided. Julie's Column Tena koutou Its that time of year again, we seem to work hard all year and then December looms in front of us as the final sprint before the big break. HEALTH PROMOTION This month KCI received 14 Health Promotion (HP) applications from individuals, community groups and organizations from across Kaipara. This is the second round, last year we had 8 applications. I see this as a very positive development. The HP Subcommittee has used a very comprehensive and transparent tool to guide our decision making around how to allocate the funds which this time amounted to $10,000.00. Not very much, so we wanted to be sure we funded priority groups, issues, community development and HP that was going to work for the people of Kaipara. One of the outcomes of this round of HP (apart from providing funding) is that contact has been made with the HP Forum of NZ to ask them to deliver some HP training here in Kaipara. I will be the link and coordinator for this. This will ensure those people who are starting to get involved with HP can both build their HP skills and be supported to work collaboratively with other HP providers. The next HP process will take place in May. We welcome applications from groups of Nurses to deliver HP programs. If you would like to be part of a Nursing initiative around HP., I am very keen to support you in the application process. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me, (Obviously I expect you’ll have other things on your mind over the next couple of months so I will remind you all again in the New Year.) THE YEAR FROM MY VIEWPOINT First of all I would like to acknowledge all of the amazing work that Nurses across all of the providers in Kaipara have done to achieve such phenomenal coverage levels of MeNZB. We are already experiencing significantly reduced levels of Meningococcal disease in Northland and this is directly related to the campaign. This has been a huge program and the campaign in Northland has been extremely successful. So congratulations to all of you for the contribution you have made. We have welcomed new Nurses to Kaipara, a new Primary Mental Health Coordinator, Aura Ropitini, based at Te HA, .5 FTE Primary and .5 FTE secondary. This is a new scope of practice and improves access to services for people with mild to moderate mental health problems. Judy Harris took the reigns at DMC and faced the small task of accreditation, (ha ha) when she walked in the door. (Congratulations to DMC on their success). Julie Hobson has been a real catch, a very experienced midwife and paediatirc Nurse in her former life, Julie has come to be the Kaipara Plunket Nurse, and I believe is already doing a stirling job! On top of that we have Di Lawson “back in the fold” as the new Plunket Manager, based in Kaipara, so I think we really need to make sure we make the most of having a woman with such a broad range of skills and talent here in our community. Rhonda Zielinski has returned from a year in Auckland (Yes it was a year!!) and has come back to project manage the new Kaupapa Maori Nurse Practitioner (KMNP) development at Te Ha. We have an excellent workforce of committed and experienced nurses here in Kaipara. Congratulations to Deborah Ashley Smith at DMC for successfully completing her Masters and Pharmacology papers this year, a great effort Debbie and your new knowledge will be a valuable asset to this community. The project Nurse Group has continued to meet monthly for regular catch-ups, networking, lunch, learning and discussion about issues relevant to nurses. I’m aware that the timing of these meetings isn’t ideal for DMC, the Ward or the DN. I also appreciate at the end of the day; you all have lives to live outside of work, so an after work meeting probably wouldn’t work either. Some of the Nurses have found the meetings to be very valuable for networking and learning about what each other is up to. It is also an opportunity to get feedback from Cherry about what’s happening at the KCI Board. All Nurses are very welcome to attend; membership of the group is fluid as people come as they are able. The meetings are always held on the first Wednesday of the month, how about putting the dates in your diary now! (We’ll take a break in January!) Lunch available from 12.15 meeting to start at 12.30 – 1.30. 2006 The Nursing Innovation contract finishes in August. This year the NDHB will be deciding whether to fund the Nursing Integration Leader Positions in the future. A report has been submitted to the DHB from the Innovations Evaluation Team, which will include findings from the evaluations undertaken of our project. PHO Mangers will also be considering whether to support these positions. Primary Health Care Nurses (PHCN) in Kaipara may also want to consider whether they think it is a useful/essential/valuable role to have in this community. This issue and how to “process” the views of Kaipara PHCN could be discussed at the next Project Nurse meeting. Some issues and population groups are emerging with various needs, and have potential for services to be improved, and in turn, health outcomes. Much work has been done and will continue to be worked on next year. These groups include: An intersectoral group working together to increase the range of services available in Kaipara for the elderly. An intersectoral group working together to look at the needs and possible service “configurations” for adolescents in Kaipara. A children and youth health and disability intersectoral network. Building of HP skills within the community and creating sustainable HP structures in Kaipara. Strengthening the collaboration and partnerships of parent/family/child and caregiver support services Raising awareness among the community and health providers of Kaipara of the subsidized counseling, and the Primary Mental Health services now available. Stopping Bird flu penetrating our health services and health providers!! Have a great Xmas folks, Julie PS: Attached is a flyer for you to use and circulate as you feel inclined from the Whangarei Child Poverty Acton Group and the Group against problem gambling? This is a really nice and useful alternative to the usual stressing that preparing for Christmas usually brings. A garden clean up, lawn mowing or a massage could be just the ticket!!
