Introductions took place.

Matters Arising from Nov 03 Minutes:
· Paediatric Nurse – Julie Robertson (ex Plunket) has taken up the .6 position. Once orientated, Julie will address this group and tell them about the position.
· Rural Scholarships – Close tomorrow – Trish advised that at Victoria University, Australia, it is free to do a Masters.
· CBCP Portfolios – Julie has both the NZNO ($32.50) & College ($30.00) examples. She found the NZNO one more user friendly. Both examples were available for viewing. Contact Julie if you would like more info.
· Health Promotion Calendar - Circulated. Services to get together to decide which health days to collaborate on. As Te Ha was not present today, this will be an agenda item for March.

The 13 MoH and local priorities could be a focus. Health Promotion, NH may provide some resources. Would be very useful to have a “spider” display board – HP funding? – Julie to follow up these suggestions.

$500.00 grants are available for Well Child/Tamariki Ora day initiatives. Criteria includes collaboration of services.

Other days/weeks possibly earmarked were: Parenting Awareness & Kidsafe Week.

Some nurses felt that many health problems stem from obesity and that this nurse group might be able to assist Fran Glamazina who has a special interest and would like to commence a programme in the area. Discussion ensued around issues of (lack of) onsite exercise and swimming facilities, and how to co-ordinate services and harness the expertise of those already here. Educating children/youth, green prescription, exercise etc. Peter Honeyfield may be interested. However, the outline of this yet to be formally formatted proposal does not fit any current funding criteria. Some outside sources could be approached i.e. Variety Club. Julie will take stock of the many aspects of this discussion to see if progress can be made toward a satisfactory outcome.

Business:
Julie tabled her report to the group and spoke to it, including items in Matters Arising and as follows:

Nurse Survey Findings & BPG’s (wound / skin care, diabetes, asthma ears): - see report

Forward Planning Workshop – Currently with Service Managers/Team Leaders to decide on how many staff can attend. Scheduled as an overnight stay at the Omapere Tourist Hotel from 5pm Monday 5th April, with the workshop taking place on Tuesday, finishing around 3.30pm. See Julie’s report for the workshop’s objectives. More information available soon.

KCI Website – Has been updated. Recent editions of the “Korero” are available for viewing. Visit www.kci.org.nz

Departmental/Service News – (This will become a regular agenda item) - Celeste advised that the operating bus was due back in Dargaville on March 8th. 25 sets of grommets are scheduled. Previous visits have seen a backlog of mainly Whangarei residents processed (dental). Celeste is now reviewing Kaipara files to make sure they take priority.

Meeting Closed: 1.45 pm

Next Meeting: 12.30, Wednesday, 3rd March 2004. Venue TBA. (As per the decision in Nov 03, meetings will be held on the first Wednesday of the month)

Introducing: Alison Freemantle-Pilkington, Practice Nurse, DMC
Allison recently moved to
Dargaville with her horses, dogs and cats.

She has worked in ICU and A&E completing courses in both areas, and has many years of surgical nursing and theatre nursing experience. She returned from one year in the Caribean where she was nursing on a cruise ship (how does one apply for such a job Allison?) Prior to this, she worked as a Clinical Nurse Advisor at the new superclinic in Manukau City, Auckland.

Allison looks forward to meeting many of you and knows that she is going to enjoy living in Dargaville.

Julie's Column
The first meeting of the year which was held in February was attended by a small, but important group of nurses. Thanks to those who made it. To ensure everyone knows about when the nurse meetings are held, it was agreed at the Nov meeting to be on the 1st Wednesday of the month. That is:
April—No meeting, due to it being the day after the forward planning workshop.
May 5th
June 2nd
July 7th
August 4th
September 1st
October 6th
November 3rd
December 1st

We are trialing the Community Services lounge as a venue, as it can hold more people. If we are comfortable using that space we will continue to do so, it is up to us.

NEW NURSES IN KAIPARA
We warmly welcome two new nurses to Kaipara. Allison is pictured and has recently settled in with the team at DMC. She brings a wealth of experience & knowledge from Auckland. Welcome Allison!

Shannon Price has recently commenced at Te Ha. Shannon is a new grad from Northland Polytechnic and comes from Ngati Whatua. Shannon was busy doing a cervical smear training course when Korero went out so next month we will have a photo and Shannon’s own introduction. Welcome to you also Shannon.

FORWARD PLANNING WORKSHOP
The forward planning workshop to be held at Omapere Tourist Hotel on 5th and 6th April is coming together. At this stage we have approximately 25 nurses attending, who will be representing the various disciplines which make up Primary and rural nursing in Kaipara.

This workshop will provide a valuable opportunity to explore possibilities for integration of primary nursing. In addition, it is an opportunity for new initiatives to be developed in response to the health issues in our community. By taking time out from the pressures of every day work and giving this subject our full and undivided attention, I hope we will develop not only enhanced systems and processes which support integrated working, but develop innovative and responsive health practices for the health needs to the people of Kaipara.

Registration forms will be available at the Nurse Project meeting and will also be disseminated to the team leaders/managers. If you require further information about the workshop please don’t hesitate to come along and talk to me or phone me on x 6885.
