Business: Report by Rhonda - On Oct 16/17, Rhonda and Charlotte attended a Nursing Council conference in Wellington. Following this, at the request of Mary Munn who could not attend on behalf of Northland, they attended a meeting with Frances Hughes, Chief Advisor for Nursing, MOH for a presentation, discussion and evaluation on the Nursing Innovation Funding projects which was very interesting. Some of the issues discussed at the conference workshops were: · Health Practitioner Competency Act · Establishment of a new forum for midwives · Stats on the no. of nurses practicing vs those registered but not practicing · Stats on the no. of nurses leaving NZ to work overseas · Statistics on the make up of NZ’s nursing population – British Nurses form the largest part of the work force · The fact that = input does not necessarily imply = outcome · Debate on the merits of a possible intern year for nurses – i.e. 2 levels of competencies · CCP 2005 – advice on getting portfolios together Rhonda stated that this was a very good conference to attend and would recommend it. Book early for next year to get the cheap airfares! Contact Rhonda for further info on these bullet points. One of the things that Frances Hughes reiterated regarding scholarship applications was that the ones that get approved provide all pertinent information. It is pivotal that applications show a connection to how it will affect your area of practice. Paediatric Liaison Nurse - This position was recently advertised incorrectly as a Whangarei based position. Supposed to be Dargaville based. Ad to be re-run as some Dargaville applicants may have been discouraged from applying. Lou has some minutes from the original meeting held back in Sept 2001. Scholarships - Team Leaders and Julie willing to assist anyone put their applications together. A reminder to be included in the Korero. NDHB have some scholarship funds becoming available in 2004. Watch this space. Visit by Massey University - MONDAY, 10TH NOVEMBER 2003 , 10.00 – 12.00, VIDEO CONFERENCING ROOM, MAIN ENTRANCE, DARGAVILLE HOSPITAL. It was suggested that Julie also contact Auckland University as they are interested in providing information on their courses also. Would be good if they both Massey and Auckland were available on the same day. Julie to look into. Farewell to Roberta Robinson – This will be Roberta’s last meeting as she is retiring from the KCHT Board in November. The Board will appoint another rep for the consumer position with the Nurse Project Group. Roberta was thanked for her input into group discussions. Julies Report -- Time did not allow Julie to go over the written report that had been circulated at the meeting. It will be included in the November Korero. Meeting Closed with Karakia: 1.40 pm Next Meeting: 12.30 Tuesday, 25th November 2003. Julie's Column Kia Ora As Nurse Integration Leader (NIL), I have been in post for three months. The stock take of Primary Health Care Nursing (PHCN) services in Kaipara has been the major focus of my work. I am also seeking information on gaps, overlaps or fragmentation and perceived issues of priority which the PHCN are aware of. So far about 7 surveys of 30 have been returned. Thank you to those who gave feedback on the draft surveys, the information was useful and resulted in a more streamlined and hopefully less onerous document for nurses to use, without compromising on the quality of the information sought. I have identified other sources for data which may also influence the choice of projects which will be developed. These include: Maori Health committee, Kuia and Kaumatua feedback hui, The local Kohanga Reo management committees, Johnathon Jarman, (Medical Officer of Health), Kaipara Community Health committee, Dargaville Medical Centre GP’s. Josie Scott, Manager of Palliative care services. There are a number of other potential groups and communities which could be consulted with. The tension lies around how much consulting should be done. i.e. to ask those who will be affected or who have high health use issues and to gather information that is going to allow a clear picture of what are the priority health issues. Alternatively, to ensure all groups within the community have the opportunity to have a say on what they think are the important health issues which need addressing. Given time, resource, and potential for action, the assessment probably needs to be limited to somewhere around what has been undertaken. The goal is to identify where service improvements can be made which will improve health outcomes and will involve at least two groups of PHCN’s. By the end of November the Needs Assessment should be complete. The collated information will then be submitted to the Nurse Project group with recommendations on which topics have presented as priorities and would be the most appropriate first areas to work on. It is anticipated the projects will get underway early in the New Year. Massey University academic staff will be coming to Whangarei and Dargaville on Nov 10th to present information about Health related courses for nurses. Next year, after Easter, will probably be another time when other educational institutions as previously discussed will be invited. In collaboration with the other NIL’s and the Northern Rural Allied Health Consortium a plan is being developed to allocate funds which have been made available through NDHB for rural retention of PHCN. These funds are a one off and are for next year. Some publicity has been undertaken which has highlighted the successful appointment and commencement of the NIL’s. It also brings into focus developments happening in PHC. I have been attending monthly meeting of the KCI sub committees which have been established to coordinate the following projects: Asthma, Immunisation, Diabetes and Health Promotion. The Cervical Smear training dates have been finalized for February 24th, 25th and 26th. We are negotiating with the National Screening Unit (NSU) for the funding of the course to be extended beyond this year.
