Congratulations to all – applause, applause.

Previous Minutes/Matters Arising:
· Nomination Process for the Nurse Rep on the KCI Board. Raewyn circulated and spoke to a document which outlined the timeline, nomination & election process, information on meetings etc. Some information was updated and will be distributed to employers and nurses next week.
· Orientation Rhonda thanked Jen, Trish and other services for assisting Te Ha in completing their orientation policy and process. Zoe (aka as Chris’s (Tipa) daughter) is the guinea pig!

Business:
Presentation by June Henwood on her new Clinical Nurse Education role for Te Ha O Te Oranga:
June added to the information in her write up in the July Korero. She will shortly be taking 2 months leave and will see everyone again in mid Novembers when she will promote a collaborative approach to nursing care amongst the providers.

Trish Crompton on MeNZB rollout:
Handout circulated - commencing in Kaipara in November, advertisements for Northland will start soon. Clinics will also be held in outlying areas and on marae. Booked appointments will be encouraged (if available, a timetable will be included in the next Korero). Any nurses interested in taking vaccinator training can be assisted through the KCI outreach fund. DMC will employ trained vaccinators on a casual basis. Contact Trish for further details.

Jen Udy on KCI Nurse Rep and Maternity:
Contact Jen if you require further information on what the position of KCI Nurse Rep requires.
Jen gave a report on the current status of the maternity dept which is up and running with NH midwives staffing the unit. It looks set for a busy Sept through to Nov. Antenatal classes were held last weekend with 6 mums attending. There is a new independent midwife in the area, Marie, who is working with Jill and Alana.

Presentation to Rhonda Zeilinski:
Jen presented Rhonda with a small kauri box, inlaid with a paua koru from the Nurse Project Group. Rhonda thanked everyone and indicated she was already missing them! See you back in 3 years, Rhonda!

Sharing of Facilitation duties/NIL Report:
Julie suggested that different dept/service staff might like to take it in turn to facilitate these meetings, giving others the opportunity to infuse their flavour on meetings and a chance to practice and develop skills in presentation and facilitation. KCI will still provide the admin support. Glenis volunteered for the September meeting. Julie’s written report was circulated at meeting start.

ECLIPSE:
We are fortunate to have the person (David Warren), who designed the software for this device to come to Kaipara for a presentation He will be in Kaipara on Wednesday, August 11th, 12.30 – 1.30 – in the Conference Room. Lunch Provided. Panui and information circulated.

Feedback:
Rhonda acknowledged how the “winter malaise” season seems to have been very late this year, with it peaking about now. DMC and the Ward are very busy and she would like to acknowledge the close working relationship Te Ha have developed with Jen, who had left the meeting to help plan a discharge to accommodate the admittance/transfer of a local Kaumatua. Rhonda also acknowledged a reception staff member at DMC, who advised that the waiting period for the duty Dr was quite a long time, but kept insisting that she bring her sick baby in if need be, as the PN’s could triage and get them through quickly if required. Rhonda had not identified herself and was impressed with the good PR.

Meeting Closed: 1.45

Next Meeting: Wednesday 1st September 04 - 12.30 – 1.30 - Lunch Provided. The September meeting will be facilitated by Glenis Turner.

Allison has worked at DMC since December 2003 and I think she would be a good nurse representative because she is passionate about nurses’s professional development and recognition. She is not afraid to voice her opinion in support of the nursing profession and has proved herself to be a reliable, conscientious nurse.

Candidate:
Cherry Waldron

Rhonda Zeilinski

Cherry possesses strong leadership qualities. She is assertive, articulate, thorough, a good listener, outspoken with a friendly, likable nature. Cherry has strong community links and works well with all other health providers in a collaborative and integrated manner. Cherry has worked in a diverse range of roles within secondary and primary healthcare services. She will be a competent, confident and capable representative for nursing at PHO level.

JULIE'S COLUMN
HAERE RA RHONDA
This month Kaipara Health site and Te Ha O Te Oranga O Ngati Whatua say farewell to Rhonda Zielinski. Rhonda is to start as the NIL with the Tamaki PHO in Auckland. She has kindly agreed to stay on the KCI and KCHT Boards until replacements are found. We wish her well. I know the Te Ha nurses will rise to the challenge of this transition period until a suitable replacement for Rhonda’s position is found.
Welcome also to Marama Brown, the new Disease State Management Nurse at Te Ha, who comes with a kete full of experience and knowledge from Whaka Whiti Ora Pai, in Te Hapua.

IMMUNISATION OUTREACH AT DARGAVILLE PLUNKET ROOMS
Recently, the nurses at DMC, Te Ha and Plunket have collaborated to provide Imms for children less than 5 years on Tuesdays at the Dargaville Plunket Rooms. This service has been established in response to community needs identified by nurses. Initially, this service is meeting the needs for some of the Brethren Community of Kaipara. Over time, it is expected to develop further.
This is an excellent example of integration and collaboration, and nurses overcoming contractual restraints to meet the needs of the community.
For more information, please contact either Trish at DMC, Shannon at Te Ha or Janine at the Plunket rooms.

TE TAI TOKERAU PRIMARY HEALTH CARE NURSE LEADERSHIP GROUP
(TTT, PHC, NLG). Quite a mouthful really!

This group meets every 6 weeks. Issues relevant to PHC Nursing are worked on. At the last meeting, discussion took place around developing the ‘First Year of Practice Program’ for Primary health Care Nursing. This initiative will be building on work already done by the then Director of Nursing, Leonie Gallagher and two recent Iwi provider, Nursing Capacity Hui. This program will address the issue of recruitment and retention of the PHC workforce. I will keep you updated on how this progresses.

Another initiative with this group is, raising awareness, facilitating discussion and exploring the ways in which PHC Nurse Practitioners (NP) in Te Tai Tokerau could be accommodated, employed and located. By the end of this year we are anticipating there will be two returning to PHC in the Far North, and it will only grow from there.

KAIPARA YOUTH WORKERS HUI
Last week I was invited to attend the above Hui in Pouto to provide information on PHO’s and the way PHO’s could support Community Workers to access resources for youth programs in Kaipara. Services to improve access (SIA) and Health Promotion (HP) are two funding streams which could be applied for to develop programs for young people, as community research shoes does not access Primary health care services.

There were a number of organizations present who had resources who could be accessed. In particular, the Lotteries Foundation Manager circulated very useful information about how to access lotteries money for community groups. Compared to the health budget, they have vast sums. PHC Nursing can include advocacy for community groups. I have details for any of you may want to support community groups apply for funding. The application process has been reviewed, and is now much more “applicant friendly”.

If you would like to know more about any of the above issues, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

"RE-DOING IT IN DARGAVILLE"
PRESENTATION AT MOBILE SURGICAL
SERVICES CONFERENCE HELD IN
WELLINGTON

On the 20th and 21st of August 2004, Celeste Sherman, Brenda Jackson, Dot Johnson and myself were privileged to attend the Mobile Surgical Services (MSS) conference that was held in Wellington over the weekend.

We arrived on a beautiful Wellington day without a breath of wind – yes true and in eagerness thought we had better put the final touches to our presentation.

We were third to present on the Saturday morning and a lot of hard work had gone into the video and power point presentation. We were all somewhat nervous and we sat quietly waiting our turn.

The presentation was called ‘Doing it in Dargaville” . We talked about the team at Dargaville and then presented a 20 minute long video that nurses generously gave their precious time to put together and they talked about “the way it was”. The participants at the conference were able to relate to this and it bought back many memories of how it used to be in many rural hospitals. The days when rural hospitals were buzzing with surgeons and autoclaves.

Following the video, we concluded with a power point presentation of what has happened since the closure of surgical services in 1994. We talked about the benefits to the community and to the nursing staff in having surgical services re-instated in Dargaville.

We will redo the presentation at the September Nurse Project meeting so if you would like to see the full presentation please come along to the meeting and see it. We won the prize for the best presentation from a rural hospital. This was a $100.00 Whitcoulls voucher.

I would like to thank my colleagues for the effort they put into the presentation and the fact that they overcome stage fright and nerves and presented. They were a credit to the Kaipara and we should all be proud of the work that we do and work together to improve the outcomes of the communities health.

The entire conference was informative and interesting, not once did we feel the need to nod off and have a snooze, despite the late nights and the early starts. I would also like to acknowledge the colleagues that supported us from home and who sent the many text messages and made phone calls to wish us well.

Nursing Services Manager
